Nebelung Cat – History, Personality, Health and More

The Nebelung is a domestic cat breed that is extremely rare. Have you ever come across one? If that’s the case, you’ve probably seen their lengthy bodies and bright emerald eyes. Evergreen Forest’s lengthy fur is denser than theirs! They are gentle and have a mellow demeanour in nature.

Is their name enough to pique your interest? Well! It is a combination of the German word ‘Nebel’ (mist/fog) and the Nibelungen-Lied, a Medieval Germanic legend. Doesn’t this seem like an ineffective combination?

It isn’t, in fact! Nebel resembles Nebelung’s bluish-grey coat. Furthermore, two characters from the Nibelungen-Lied, German hero Siegfried and queen Brunhilde, assisted in naming the breed’s progenitors. It’s worth noting that they’re also known as Longhaired Russian Blue!

Do you want to learn more about the Nebelung cat? Then scroll down. Nebelung Cats have a long and illustrious history.

Before going into detail about Nebelung, it’s important to mention that it’s a relatively young breed. Their name translates to ‘monster of the mist’ in German, owing to their enticing and shimmering Silver-blue coat. Their glittering green eyes add to the misty coat’s beauty.

Do you want to learn more about the origins of this breed? So, here we go. Cora Cobb was a woman who lived in the early 1980s. Her son received a black domestic shorthair cat as a gift.

One of the kittens had lengthy, blue hair since this cat was mating with a Russian Blue male. Cora was enthralled by this cat and affectionately called him ‘Siegfried.’

She later witnessed another litter from her son’s cat in the mid-eighties. What’s more, guess what? This time, a female kitten with long blue hair emerged. This one drew her in as well, and she christened her ‘Brunhilde.’

Afterward, Cora thought of establishing a breeding programme with Brunhilde and Siegfried. This was due to their resemblance to the Russian Blue, with the exception of their coat type, which was different.

Following this crossbreeding, a whole new breed, the ‘Nebelung,’ was born. The International Cat Association first recognised it as a new breed in 1987, and the American Cat Fanciers Association followed suit later.

However, Nebelungs aspire to be recognised by the Cat Fanciers Federation of Cat Fanciers Association, and we can all be hopeful that they will do so soon.

Nebelung Cat Physical Characteristics

They have a powerful build and are athletic, just like their Russian Blue counterparts. They are both long and graceful. They have pointed ears to go with their lovely coat.

Emerald eyes, which are often yellowish in some cats, adorn them to enhance their beauty. These kitties are very sociable and affectionate. Most of the time, you’ll see them running around and playing with their’soft toys.’

Furthermore, they have a high level of energy, making them active and playful creatures. They have a modified wedge-shaped head that is more rounded than pointed, with huge, pointed ears perched on top.

Their grey coat is smooth and silky, with silver tips. This double coat feels like exquisite silk when you touch it.

The hair on the tail is thicker than the hair on the rest of the body. Hair tuffets can also be found between the toes, behind the ears, and in the pantaloons of the hind legs.

Their weight can range from 7 to 15 pounds, and they live for 13 to 16 years. Furthermore, these cats have a high level of intelligence and can frequently amuse their owners with their humour!

Nebelung Cat’s Personality

If you’ve ever encountered a Nebelung, you’ve probably observed that they’re quiet, introverted, and uninterested in socialising. Right? This, however, is not the case.

Despite their cautious demeanour, these cats are quite playful and friendly. They enjoy climbing over the kitty-condos and taking a quick look about their immediate surroundings!

They quickly adapt to the house’s environment and form close bonds with the other members of the family. They are, nevertheless, uneasy about opening in front of strangers and guests. These kittens are incredibly loyal to their owners and family members and continually desire their attention.

These cats aren’t particularly friendly with others, but they are quite affectionate with their owners. They are continuously attempting to gain attention from those in their immediate vicinity and are extremely offended when they are ignored.

Due to a lack of care, they may even injure themselves out of fear or anxiety. This is because they expect their owners to show them the same unconditional love and attention.

Unlike other intelligent breeds, Nebelungs aren’t so destructive. Surprisingly, despite their want for attention, they are frequently spotted playing with themselves. They only require a condo and a wool-ball!

Nebelungs can be amusing at times! You might burst out laughing at their innocent gaffes and sardonic expressions. They keep themselves and their owners entertained, and they never fail to make an impression.

However, keep in mind that they have a high sense of self-worth and may become irritated if they see you laughing at their mistakes!

These felines also serve as living alarm clocks! Don’t be surprised. They are extremely picky about when their meals are served.

Furthermore, they have the power to jolt you awake from your deepest slumber simply to ensure that they are served on time. They also prefer to live in a tranquil and stable setting where they can enjoy their own company or that of others close to them.

Finally, they are one of those creatures who are devoted to their owners, faithful, and loving. Their presence is always appreciated, and the owners are always enthralled by their ‘pitter-patter’ throughout the house.

Health of Nebelung Cats

It is reassuring to cat owners and cat enthusiasts to learn that these cats are generally healthy and do not have any health issues. However, we cannot ignore the reality that both mixed breed and pedigreed cats can suffer from a variety of health issues. Nebelungs, on the other hand, are normally healthy.

This breed, like other cats, needs to be regularly nourished; otherwise, they will lose weight and become weak and lethargic. A healthy cat, in truth, is the outcome of a thoughtful and diligent owner.

Nebelung Cats: How to Care For Them

Nebelung’s most appealing feature is its smokey, gleaming coat. It should be combed regularly (at least twice a week) to keep it free of stray hair and equally distribute skin oils, and to retain its shine and smoothness.

The significant risk of periodontal disease, which destroys the gums and jawbones, is addressed by cats. Make sure you brush your Nebelungs’ teeth at least once a week to avoid this.

Nothing, however, beats good dental hygiene on a daily basis. Apart from that, cats gather dirt in their nails as they prowl about, even outside. To get rid of it, clip their nails once a week; otherwise, infections may develop.

You can notice a white watery discharge accumulating in the corners of your eyes when you wake up. This is also true in cats! A clean, soft, damp cloth can be used to remove the discharge from the corners. Remember to clean another eye with a new region of the same cloth to avoid the risk of infection.

How could we overlook the ears? Take a peek at their ears to see if they need to be cleaned right away. If this is the case, wet a cotton ball or a soft cloth with cider vinegar and warm water (50-50 mixture). Cotton swabs are not permitted! They are detrimental to the ear’s inner workings.

Bathroom hygiene is very important to Nebelungs. As a result, make certain their litter box is clean. If this is not the case, they may not utilise it to cause you problems. As a result, this should not be overlooked.

Because Nebelungs are playful and energetic, taking them outside can be dangerous owing to the chance of accidents. They’re also at risk of contracting diseases from other cats and dogs, just like other indoor cats.

In addition, if the cat is not treated carefully, it may contract other illnesses. As a result, it’s critical to keep these cats inside as much as possible by providing them with adequate space, love, and affection.

Conclusion

It is well knowledge that Nebelungs have a lustrous coat and are extremely appealing. All cat lovers are taken aback by their long physique and resemblance to Russian Blue.

They’re both gorgeous and sweet. They are equally loyal and affectionate towards their owners, despite their lack of openness and comfort with outsiders. They might be seen yearning for their owner’s attention but yet enjoying their own company.

Well, having a lovely cat with such interesting personality hues is always a plus. Their owners are awestruck not only by their adorableness, but also by their intelligence and loyalty.

Last but not least, rather of reading about other people’s wonderful experiences with cats, it’s preferable to get one for yourself using Nebelung. So, when do you plan on getting one?
