When did you first become a fan of the genre? What literary works initially sparked your interest in poetry? Because poetry wasn’t given much attention in my schools at the time, I started creating my own before I started reading other people’s.

When I was in middle school, a writing mentor gave me a book of Sonia Sanchez’s new and selected poetry called “Shake Loose My Skin.” I grew to enjoy it more and more with each reading.

What Poet or Poetry Anthology gave you the Initial Inspiration to Start Writing?

Although these aren’t poetry, I attribute my desire to become a writer to Toni Morrison’s “The Bluest Eye” and Ray Bradbury’s “Dandelion Wine.” As a young reader, I found these stories intriguing and was curious as to how the authors came up with their concepts.

What Poets’ Writings Still have an Impact on You?

To enquire about the quality of the air I breathe would be equivalent. Examples of notable poets who have contributed to the canon of literature include Lucille Clifton and Federico Garca Lorca.

Have there been any Poets that you’ve Come to Love Over Time?

Shakespeare is the undisputed winner because he is a major literary character. But for a very long time, I had doubts about Shakespeare for this precise reason.

When I was yearning to read about someone who looked like me, my teachers tried to push him into my consciousness as an example of a white man. If you’re going to avoid an author, at least read some of their writing so you can comprehend why. I owed it to the literary community and to myself to do it.
