“New York City has one of the strongest variant surveillance systems in the country, sequencing hundreds of cases a week. And we do anticipate detecting omicron in New York in the coming days based on what we know about its global spread,” Choksi said in a statement.
“A lot still is unknown about omicron because it’s so early. But studies are underway, and we will know more about the variant in the coming weeks.”
He urged vaccination and masks for the people as a precaution against the virus. “Our understanding of omicron will advance, and we’ll be able to adjust our public health strategies accordingly,” Choksi said.

What is Omicron
Scientists in South Africa notified the World Health Organization (WHO) in November 2021 of a dramatic surge in COVID-19 cases in Gauteng province, which coincided with the identification of Omicron. As of 9 November 2021, the earliest confirmed Omicron infection was found in a sample taken from a human.
22 sites across the globe, including those in North America, South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia, have confirmed its existence as of 3 December 2021.
