What is Omicron

Scientists in South Africa notified the World Health Organization (WHO) in November 2021 of a dramatic surge in COVID-19 cases in Gauteng province, which coincided with the identification of Omicron. As of 9 November 2021, the earliest confirmed Omicron infection was found in a sample taken from a human.

22 sites across the globe, including those in North America, South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia, have confirmed its existence as of 3 December 2021. Many of the mutations in Omicron are cause for concern. Many of these mutations have not yet been characterised but include the well-known N501Y, D614G, K417N, and T478K.

Initial data from South African epidemiologists point to a higher likelihood of reinfection with Omicron compared to other variations of concern.

Testing to determine whether or whether the virus is partially resistant to currently available COVID-19 vaccinations is underway due to the nature of the mutations. Whether Omicron is more contagious than other variations or whether infection with it results in more severe disease is yet unclear.

According to the WHO, there is currently no evidence that symptoms linked with Omicron are distinct from those associated with other variations.
